The theme for this year's Durga puja is "Three Avatars of the prime goddess". During times of immense strife Goddess Durga was reincarnated as Mahakali, Maha Lakhsmi and Maha Saraswati , each of whom vanquished demons wreaking havoc on heaven and on earth and hence ensuring peace and harmony. The theme glorifies position of women in a male dominated society .The main avatar of the prime goddess Maha Lakshmi is depicted with eighteen hands and is portrayed in a majestic manner slaying demon Mahishasur.
